Neck pain is most commonly caused by activities that strain the muscles in the neck. Neck pain can spread to your upper back or arms, and can limit your range of motion.
Most people experience neck pain throughout their lives, usually caused by poor posture, strain or even sleeping in a bad position. However, neck pain can be caused by more serious conditions. Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common. Also, a narrowing of the spinal canal in the neck (called cervical spinal stenosis) can lead to neck pain and loss of mobility. Infection in the neck can also create pain. Symptoms of neck pain can include knots, stiffness or severe pain in your neck, and you may have difficulty moving your neck. If there is pressure on a spinal nerve root, you may experience pain that shoots down your arm, as well as numbness, tingling or weakness in your arm.
