Knee pain is the most common complaint orthopedists treat. The knee itself takes the brunt of the damage we do to our bodies. The knee is comprised of four bones (the femur, the tibia, the kneecap or patella and the fibula), which work in conjunction to allow motion. Ligaments attach to the bones to ensure they remain connected. Tendons connect muscles to the bones to allow movement. Cartilage provides a cushion between the different bones. Bursae are fluid-filled sacs that help cushion the knee. Because of the complexity of the knee structure, injury, strain and breakdown of the knee are common. Inflammation is the most common sign of knee strain or injury.

Inflammation is how the body deals with injury, and can cause pain and limit mobility. For knee pain and inflammation that isn’t severe, rest, ice, elevation and compression can help alleviate pain. For more severe problems, such as fracture, fever, wounds, swelling and medical conditions such as bursitis and arthritis, medical attention is a must.

Treatments can vary from over-the-counter pain medicine to exercises and physical therapy that can increase range of motion and relieve pain. For more severe cases, especially those involving age-related knee pain, joint replacement surgery is an option.

If you are experiencing knee pain, PremierOrtho can help. Our goal is to make you feel better. Call us today at 812-333-1933 to set up an appointment, or click here to send us an email.
