Total joint replacement involves surgery to remove and replace the ends of bones in a damaged joint to create new joint surfaces. Hip replacement surgery involves replacing the upper end of the thighbone (femur) with a metal ball, and resurfacing the hip socket of the pelvic bone with a metal shell and plastic liner. Knee replacement surgery is performed in a similar way, with the ends of the damaged thigh and shin bones (and usually the kneecap) replaced with artificial surfaces lined with metal and plastic.
Surgery is performed in a hospital with general anesthesia most often used. The procedure is done on an inpatient basis, and your hospital stay is usually less than a week. Physical therapy is recommended afterwards to ensure you achieve the full range of motion. Rehabilitation is intensive and is designed to get you back on your feet as quickly as possible.
Since each patient and each surgery is unique, this description is designed to be an overview only. Factors such as your age, overall health and any additional chronic conditions you have will affect any type of surgery. Premier
