Back injections (otherwise known as Epidural Injections, meaning “around the spinal cord”) are used to treat common lower back pain issues as a first step before surgery. Back injections have proven successful in treating conditions such as sciatica, radiculopathy (inflammation or damage to a nerve in the lower back), and spinal stenosis. Injections are less invasive than surgery and provide pain relief in many patients that can last anywhere from weeks to forever.

Back injections are performed in a hospital setting. You will receive a local anesthetic. You will lie face down on a surgical table. Dr. Jeff Thomas will inject a needle into the epidural sac around your spine and inject a corticosteroid, which will relieve inflammation. By injecting the corticosteroid into the epidural sac, the anti-inflammatory properties of the steroid are concentrated in that area. Pain relief is almost immediate, and the anti-inflammatory effects of the steroid relieve pressure for a varied amount of time.

As with all surgical procedures, certain risks are involved. A complete medical history is necessary to determine whether the benefits of epidural injection outweigh any potential risks.

If you are experiencing back pain, PremierOrtho can help. Our goal is to make you feel better. Call us today at 812-333-1933 to set up an appointment, or click here to send us an email.
