Hips are among the most ingenious parts of the human body. Their unique ball-and-socket joint allows for a wide range of movement. A cushion of cartilage absorbs shock and allows for fluid movement. Much like any part of the body that is used extensively, our hips can wear down or become damaged. The hip itself can become fractured in a fall or injury.
The most common causes of hip pain include arthritis, (osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis), which leads to the inflammation of the hip joint and the breakdown of cartilage that normally cushions the hip bones; fractures, which are more common as we age; bursitis, which is an inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs (bursae) that protect muscles and tendons; tendinitis, which is an inflammation of the tendons usually caused by overuse; and simple muscle strain. Less common causes are cancer and avascular necrosis (or osteonecrosis), which is a condition that reduces blood flow to the hip bone, causing the bone to die.
Many types of hip pain are treatable by non-invasive means, using over-the-counter pain medicine and relaxing the joint. However, for many patients with degenerative hip joints, joint replacement surgery is an attractive option.
