A majority of back pain is centered in the lower back or lumbosacral region. Stress, overuse and muscle strain are often the cause, but more serious conditions such as injury, osteoarthritis or a herniated disc are also common causes. The cause of lower back pain can often be compounded by your body’s response to the pain. Muscle strain, for example, can cause you to move in different ways to avoid pain, leading to additional pain. This can lead to a constant tension on the muscles, bones and discs, which make you more prone to injury.
Treatment is available for persistent back pain. Mild pain medication and exercise will provide relief for less severe pain. However, if the pain is caused by more serious conditions, more intense regimens may be required. Back pain may be caused by injury or overuse of muscles, ligaments and joints. Pressure on nerve roots can also be the cause. Nerve root compression can be caused by a herniated disc which can be brought on by repeated vibration or motion or by a sudden strain to the lower back; osteoarthritis, which usually develops with age and affects the small facet joints in the spine; spondylolysis or spondylolisthesis, which are defects that can cause the vertebrae to slide over one another when you perform certain activities; spinal stenosis or narrowing of the spinal canal, which commonly develops with age; spinal deformities such as scoliosis; or fractures, which can occur from trauma experienced in accidents or bad falls.
